We are looking for innovators, subject experts and thought leaders to share their knowledge and passion. Our goal is to ensure the profession are remaining at the cutting edge of new and emerging trends and developments.

 


GENERAL INSURANCE 2019 IFOA CONFERENCE PROGRAMME CALL FOR SPEAKERS

Submission closing date – 31 May 2019

The newly formed General Insurance Lifelong Learning (GILL) Committee are busy preparing the General Insurance (GI) Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme for 2019. The events we are currently looking for speakers are - 

  • Current Issues in General Insurance (CIGI) – There will be no change to the structure of the Current Issues one-day conference although we plan to shift the focus and aim the conference at increasing awareness on a variety of topical issues across the practice areas.
  • GIRO Conference 2019 – We do not plan to amend the content of our flagship GIRO conference which will continue to be aimed at increasing awareness and encouraging discussion on a variety of topical issues, technical sessions and workshops and representing the latest research.
  • Webinar Series – We will also be offering a number of topical webinars throughout the year which are intended to vary in length dependent on the subjects identified.

To support this broad agenda, the GILL Committee has issued a call for speakers where we are looking for a diverse line-up of quality knowledgeable speakers to provide a variety of perspectives and challenges covering technical and professional non-life actuarial areas. We are interested in hearing about any current topics. Some potential areas may include:

  • Effect of Brexit on the insurance industry
  • Ogden Discount Rate
  • IFRS17
  • Inflation
  • Cyber Risk
  • AI and Machine Learning
  • Data Science
  • Market Disruption
  • Latest research from working parties
  • Automation
  • Dealing with distorted incurred data (e.g. Ogden impact)              
  • New reserving methodologies (e.g. compartmental reserving)
  • Attrition & Large Losses
  • Claims Inflation
  • Cyber
  • Exposure management

The call for speakers for the GIRO conferences and potential webinar topics will close on 31 May 2019, submissions for CIGI will be chosen sooner. All submissions will be considered independently by the GILL Committee and we will get back to you shortly after the deadline. If you are a competent presenter, keen to share your extensive knowledge of the GI industry and your technical expertise you are encouraged to submit a proposal for one or more of the GI Seminars taking place in 2019. When submitting a proposal please state which event you would prefer to speak at.

Pension Continuing Professional Development program for 2019 

Submission closing date – 30 June 2019

The Pension Lifelong Learning Committee are busy preparing the Pension Continuing Professional Development program for 2019. Speakers for the 2019 Pension Conference in June have now been appointed, thank you to everyone who applied. We are currently looking for speakers for the rest of our program -

  • Pensions Autumn Seminar – likely to be held in London in November 2019. The committee is combining our Investment, Legal update and Current Issues seminars to provide a wide ranging Autumn highlights event.
  • Pensions Webinar Series 2019 – We are also looking to offer a number of topical webinars throughout the year which are intended to vary in length dependent on the subjects identified.

To support this agenda, the Committee has issued a call for speakers. We are looking for a diverse line-up of knowledgeable speakers, who are good communicators, to provide a variety of perspectives and challenges covering technical and professional actuarial areas. We are interested in hearing about any current topics. Some potential areas may include:

· Case studies or practical examples on a topical issue which may include contributors from more than one firm, or a firm presenting with clients

· Panel discussions – volunteers/ topical suggestions welcome

· Topical issues in investment or economics

· Legal update (pension lawyer)

· Pensions and the end game – journey plan, self-sufficiency, buy out and/or consolidation

· TPR’s code of practice – practical experience/thought leadership/discussion

· Presentations from working parties where there has been new or further developed research.

· Data visualisation – how to communicate analysis to clients

· Data science

· Business skills – client engagement, personal impact, networking

The call for speakers for the Pension Autumn Seminar will close on 30 June 2019. Submissions for our Webinar 2019 series will be open throughout the year. When submitting a proposal please state which event you would prefer to speak at. All submissions will be considered independently by the Committee.

By speaking you will provide CPD opportunities for IFoA members. As a speaker, you will also enjoy networking opportunities and additional benefits.

We deliver a wide variety of events throughout the year for which we select speakers.

Alongside our six residential conferences we hold business skills seminars (masterclasses), sessional meetings, networking events, and one-day seminars/workshops. We welcome proposals from members and non-members on technical and business skill subjects.

 

How to submit your proposal to speak at a conference or event or suggest a topic for a presentation

We issue calls for speakers for our conferences and events throughout the year. As part of your submission we request the following:

  • 75-word summary which must include an outline of the technical level of knowledge required to understand the topic and the practice area(s)/theme that the topic falls within
  • format of your session i.e. presentation, debate, panel session, round table discussion
  • company and contact details (of all speakers involved).

If you want to nominate a speaker or topic, but do not want to speak yourself, we are also keen to hear from you.

Please note that by submitting an application you are agreeing to allow your name and contact details to be passed onto the organisation committee who may contact you regarding your submission.

    Our motivation for discussing this important subject comes from some exciting recent research which has analysed the impact of behavioural factors on the decision to purchase an annuity. This work has shown that behavioural factors can explain the well-known low demand for immediate annuities but this research also identifies an important opportunity in relation to deferred annuities (DA). The research suggests that these factors lead to positive incentives to purchase a DA and that, for longer deferred periods, a DA could be an attractive product for both consumers and insurers.

    For life insurers in the UK, the risk margin is one of the most controversial aspects of the Solvency II regime. Following its implementation, the risk margin came under considerable criticism for being too large and too sensitive to interest rate movements. These criticisms are particularly valid for annuity business – such business is of great significance to the national system for retirement provision. This criticism has led to political interest, and the risk margin was a major element of the Treasury Committee inquiry into Solvency II.

She now chairs the Treasury Select Committee whose remit is to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of HM Treasury, along with all of its agencies and associated bodies.
